With no space of its own to store and exhibit more than 500 objects–including a core group of about 150 rare uniforms–the organization needed a way to both protect and present what had become a highly regarded collection. But beginning Saturday, visitors can get a glimpse of the militia coatee that started his unforeseen career when the VWM opens a series of changing displays showcasing the renowned collection of The Company of Military Historians. Sometime in the future, all three of Nadenbousch’s uniforms will be united in a rich, unusually personal exhibit at the Virginia War Museum in Newport News. Though the abolitionist’s revolt ended in less than two days, Nadenbousch would exchange his garb for Confederate gray within 21/2 years–and lead Company D, 2nd Virginia Infantry into the Civil War as part of the famed “Stonewall Brigade.” He later fought in bloody clashes at First Manassas, Second Manassas and Gettysburg, earning the rank of colonel as well as his regiment’s helm.
